The Spirit of Orthodoxy Choir Performs at St. Andrews
By Petra T. Knox
On Sunday, December 12, 2010 The Spirit of Orthodoxy Choir
gave a beautiful and spiritually uplifting Christmas concert
in the St. Andrew sanctuary. The choir, under the direction
of Director Aleksei V. Shipovalnikov performed several hymns
and traditional Christmas carols. Among the hymns sung were
the "Troparion - Apostle Andrew the First Called",
the "Troparion of the Nativity" and the "Kontakion
of the Nativity". The Choir also sang carols in the Ukranian
and German languages. At the conclusion of the program, the
guests were invited to join in the singing of the traditional
Christmas carols "O Come all Ye Faithful", "Hard
the Herald Angels Sing" and "Stille Nacht"
(Silent Night).
The Spirit of Orthodoxy Choir was formed in 1997 and draws
its members from choir director and singers from Orthodox
Christian jurisdictions and parishes in New Jersey, New York
and Pennsylvania. It's music is representative of the major
stylistic periods of Orthodoxy Church music and the Choir
has established a reputation for outstanding interpretation
of Orthodox liturgical music in the English language, Church
Slavonic and the director and founder of the Choir.
After the program, our visitors and the Choir enjoyed fellowship
and light refreshments in the social hall hosted by the Philoptochos
and served by Betty Kelly, Merridee Evens and Petra Knox.
We look forward to welcoming them back for Christmas 2011.

Oliver Papps of Reeders (PA) has been singing on stage since
the 1950s. A number of years ago he was asked to "fill-in"

He is often highlighted in a solo. Many listeners besides
fellow singers will miss the mesmerizing voice.
Choir Director Aleksei Shipovalnikov announced that the next
CD recording will have selections chosen by our listeners.
A marketing group will determine what the audience wants to
hear. Aleksei was firm that, "We will sing it perfectly."
