In August of 2003, at the invitation
of His Grace Bishop Nikolai of Sitka and Alaska, the
Spirit of Orthodoxy Choir took their music to
Alaska, where Orthodoxy first found roots in the Americas.
There, they participated in the annual St. Herman’s
Pilgrimage and sang concerts and services in Anchorage
and Kodiak. According to His Grace, this trip was
the first time in living memory that a professional-quality
singing group has brought the music of Russian Orthodoxy
to Alaska. Fittingly, the choir’s Director,
Aleksei Shipovalnikov is the great-grandson of the
last Russian Governor of Alaska, and his sojourn there
was the first by a member of his family since his
ancestor left generations ago.
